Well, I could keep this short and just say "wow, we have to go back" but perhaps a little more detail is in order.
We disembarked in the lovely town of Bastia. It was an easy walk to the main square where we had a breakfast of bread, jam, hot chocolate and orange juice. The main square is quite large and mostly empty of people. We took a few photos and headed to pick up the rental car. That all went well except Sherrie couldn't find her credit card so we thought we lost it (although we found it a couple of days later). At any rate, after a stressful few minutes and a phone call to cancel the card we thought we had lost, we were headed south on a 158 kilometer drive along the coast of this beautiful island. We stopped a few times along the way. The first was at a gas station for drinks and a tour book. While we were there, an awesome little Italian sports car called an "Alpine" pulled in and Sherrie got a couple of photos. We stopped at a beach so I could put my feet in the Mediterranean. Then we stopped at an old Roman fort and museum that had local artifacts dating from 500 BC. Next we stopped at a old lookout outpost that was really cool...of course wandering through the topless beach in the process made the hike a bit more interesting than expected :-).
Our final side trip involved an unsuccessful attempt to take some back roads into the mountains....while we never managed to find the town we were looking for, we did get to test out the off road capabilities of our little Hyundai rental car and see some gorgeous countryside.
Once back on the main road, we made a beeline to Bonifacio and our hotel for the night. Even without a good map of the town we managed to drive right to the Hotel Genovese. We checked in and got a look at one of the best views I have ever had from our hotel room balcony. We enjoyed an amazing sunset, fantastic dinner, and stunning sunrise. After a tasty continental breakfast, we checked out and received a complimentary ride down the hill to the ferry landing. Two hours later we were headed out of the amazing harbor of Bonifacio. Au revoir France, Buongiorno Sardinia, Italy!
